Becky Glaves, from C+A Design, recently attended FutureBuild's annual conference event at ExCeL London. There was an impressive line-up of exhibitors and over 300 speakers across 10 stages, covering a range of topics. At the forefront of discussions was the urgent call for climate action and the push towards net-zero emissions.
Becky attended topics, including ‘Net-Zero Building Standards’, ‘How Can Biodiversity Net Gain Deliver Meaningful Benefits in Towns and Cities?’, ‘Delivering Net-Zero Buildings in Reality’ and ‘Passivhaus, Net Zero, and the Future Homes Standard’.
One of the key takeaways from the conference was the concept of Biodiversity Net Gain, now a mandatory consideration for all large-scale development projects. It's noteworthy that this principle will soon become a global requirement under U.N. mandates by 2030. However, the pace of change is not keeping up with the urgency of the climate crisis. Buildings currently account for a staggering 39% of global energy-related carbon emissions, with operational emissions constituting 28% and the remaining 11% attributed to materials and construction processes.
In the race against climate change, FutureBuild provides an important opportunity for members across the industry to gather and learn, driving actionable change and fostering collaboration for a sustainable future. Becky came back inspired, having gathered lots of new knowledge about key topics and current and upcoming legislation and National targets, that will help positively influence C+A Design moving forwards.
